Mentor Program - Guides for the Journey
Teen Counseling and adult involvement in the lives of youth has gained
widespread acceptance as a means to prevent juvenile delinquency,
substance abuse, school failures, negative personal relationships and
early involvement in the juvenile justice system. Big Brothers Big
Sisters (BBBS) provide a scientific evaluation of the value of mentoring
to youth. Young people in mentoring relationships were less likely to
use drugs, more likely to attend and do better in school, and more
likely to get along with family and peer members. (Joseph Tierney and
Jean Baldwin, Making a Difference: An Impact Study of Big Brother Big

Bullying - Dealing with it
Why is it important to address bullying? Isn’t it just kids being kids? Bullying is actually one of the most serious concerns in school today and often leads to serious violent crimes. Bullying is a form of victimization or peer abuse. It not only harms the target, but children who bully and those who are victimized often suffer emotional, physical and behavioral problems. A student’s ability to learn and achieve are also negatively affected. It is also one of the most common forms of stress among young people today.
What can parents and students do to prevent or address bullying?
Although it can never be eliminated completely, as much as half of all bullying can be prevented. Some children have the confidence and skills to stop bullying when it happens, but many do not. Adults have critical roles to play in helping to stop bullying, as do other children who witness it. Below are some tips for parents and students to help prevent bullying from occurring and safe methods of dealing with a bullying situation.

Truancy Reduction Program
Truancy is referred to as the “first step to a lifetime of problems” for youth (Garry, 1996). Students who are truants have a higher risk than non-truant students of involvement in drug and alcohol use, violence and gang activity (U.S Department of Education and U.S Department of Justice, 1996). It is also one of the warning signs that youth are headed for other delinquent activity, social isolation or educational failure (OJJDP Model Program Guide: Truancy Prevention).
